Pediatric Cardiology

cocuk-kardiyolojisiIn Pediatric Cardiology clinics of Medicana Hospital Group, congenital disorders of all pediatric age groups - ranging from newborns to children- and adults as well as acquired heart diseases of all childhood groups are diagnosed and treated using cutting edge devices by healthcare professionals who are experienced in this field.

Diagnostic methods used for pediatric heart diseases in our hospital:

Non-invasive diagnostic methods:

  • Electrocardiogram
  • Telecardiogram
  • Echocardiography
  • Holter monitoring
  • Cardiac stress (treadmill) test

Semi-invasive diagnostic methods:

  • Cardiac MRI
  • Cardiac CT

Invasive diagnostic methods:

  • Conventional cardiac catheterization and angiography:

This method is employed when non-invasive examinations fall short or extra information is needed. Newborns and minor children may require sedation or general anesthesia.

Angiography devices, called Flat Panel, which maximize quality of angiography images, are available only a few centers, including our hospital, in Turkey and around the world.

Interventional Cardiology: (Catheterization and angiographic treatment of heart diseases)

Recently, interventional cardiologic methods are ever increasingly used in treatment of congenital heart diseases. For example, many valve or vascular stenoses can now be eliminated in angiography laboratory with no need to surgery.

Moreover, some vascular openings that should close spontaneously after birth (PDA, fistula) and some holes in heart (ASD, VSD), if size and location is appropriate, can be non-operatively closed with this method.

Interventional cardiologic methods are associated with advantages for the patients, including but not limited to avoiding operative risks, shorter hospital stay and absence of scar formation. One should always remember that those procedures pose risk of death, albeit low. It is your right to be duly informed by the doctor about the treatment planned for your child, alternatives and benefits as well as risks.

Medicana Hospital Group is one of the pioneering facilities, where quality services are rendered using novel technologies by experienced pediatric cardiologists, cardiac surgeons and anesthesiologists in diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart diseases.

Fetal Echocardiography: (Examining heart of fetus)

Remarkable advancements in diagnosis of fetal anomalies within the last fifteen years originate from splendid development of ultrasound imaging techniques.  Recently, development of high-resolution ultrasound devices results in ability to examine anatomy and anomalies of the fetal heart.

Fetal echocardiography is a more complex and complicated examination comparing to routine obstetric ultrasound. Therefore, it should be considered for patients with high risk of cardiac anomaly. Indications of fetal echocardiogram are addressed in three categories: fetal, maternal and familial.

Fetal risk factors:

  • Non-cardiac anomalies
  • Chromosomal
  • Anatomic
  • Fetal cardiac arrhythmia
  • Non-immune hydrops fetalis
  • Suspect of cardiac anomaly on screening ultrasonography

Maternal risk factors:

  • Maternal congenital heart disease
  • Exposure to cardiac teratogen
  • Maternal metabolic disorders
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Phenylketonuria
  • Polyhydramniosis
  • Maternal infections

Familial risk factors

  • Family history notable for congenital heart disease
  • History of child with congenital heart disease
  • Paternal congenital heart disease

It is possible to examine heart of fetus and identify remarkable cardiac anomalies between 16 weeks and 22 weeks of high-risk pregnancies thanks to “Fetal Echocardiography" that is applied by well-trained specialists.
